Smart Futures 4 North Queensland is the vehicle to support young people in the Townsville region through their transition from education to secure employment. The initiative seeks to build a skilled and professional workforce through creating strong partnerships between schools, industry and training.

History

Smart Futures 4 North Queensland began in 2004 following a forum in which industry expressed concerns about the lack of accurate career information available to young people, and schools expressed a need for stronger industry links.

Scope

While the careers expo is the signature event, the initiative is far broader than that one day; we provide assistance to:

  • Schools; school visits, bus subsidies, the Resource, networks and information
  • Industry; access to students from across the region, able present themselves as an employer of choice and showcase career pathways
  • Training providers; showcase opportunities
  • Community Organisations; provide holistic support to young people to support them in their transition from education to employment

2011 Outcomes

  • 65 Exhibitors
  • 32 schools attended - Townsville, Hinchinbrook, Burdekin, Charters Towers, Hughenden, Cloncurry, Mt Isa, Palm Island, Collinsville, Proserpine, Bownen
  • 100% of schools indicated they would participate in 2012
  • 2500 students attended 
  • 6500 Try a Trade places utilised in 22 Try a Trade career areas
  • Male and female students participated in all career areas
  • 46 Industry areas showcased 

Sponsorship

Smart Futures 4 North Queensland's only source of funding is sponsorship.

We do not charge site fees. We rely on good people doing the right thing. Numerous individuals and organisations give generously of their time and resources to support this community based, not-for-profit initiative.
